Meet Jamie Starling

Hello, and thank you for visiting my website. I’m Jamie Starling, and I’ve been passionate about computers, electronics, and model trains for as long as I can remember. My love for trains even influenced my choice to attend North Carolina State University (NCSU) because of the two train tracks running through the middle of the campus. I soon discovered, much to my amusement, that my engineering path wouldn’t involve driving the trains!

My fascination with trains started in my childhood, thanks to my uncle who worked at the train yard in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Visiting him and exploring the train yard was always a highlight of my youth. While a lot has changed since the early ’80s, and train yard visits are now heavily restricted, those memories have stayed with me.

I began my first website dedicated to model trains around 2005-2007, similar to what I’m doing now. Unfortunately, a lightning strike hit our house, specifically targeting the train room. The strike caused a fire that destroyed about 30% of the house, including my train layout and much of my childhood Lionel train collection. That incident was a major setback and took the wind out of my sails for quite some time.

Recently, after moving from the Raleigh/Durham area to Beaufort, North Carolina, I decided to dive back into the world of model trains. An old friend reminded me that model trains are a passion you can never truly leave behind, and he was right. I’m excited to be back in the hobby, even though I don’t have a personal layout planned yet. Ideas like the Morehead City Port or the street running in New Bern are tempting, especially with the advances in technology and 3D printing, which open up new possibilities for scratch building.
